Her father, who was the first in his family to earn a degree, went on to become a senior civil servant during the British Raj, while her mother devoted herself to the household. Together they made sure every child was well educated and able to stand on their own. Remarkably, three of the siblings later received the Independence Award, the highest civilian state honour of Bangladesh. What gives the story its charm is how different the brothers and sisters were, turning one household into a place of many cultures and even more than one faith.
