Akutami's series combines a tightly defined power structure with horror imagery, which is much of why it found the audience it did. Volume one covers the inciting event, the sorcery school and the first assignments, moving quickly enough to establish tone without rushing the rules. Fight choreography is a strength from the start, and this Shonen Jump paperback preserves the original reading direction and sound effects.
