Bangladesh is at a turning point, and Ali Riaz’s ‘How Did We Arrive Here?’ asks how it got there. The politics he describes is bitterly polarised: democratic habits fading, violence justified by religion or by the demands of order, rights ignored, minorities and dissenters pushed aside by a majoritarian mood, institutions hollowed out on purpose, and a constitution that no longer steers the state.
None of this, Riaz argues, resembles the country imagined in 1971, whose founding promise was dignity, equality and justice for all. The book traces how the distance between that promise and the present opened up.
