Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea

Fleas swarming across a city make for an unlikely large-scale threat, which is exactly the kind of premise this series handles well. Book eleven sends Dog Man and everyone around him into the chaos that follows. Dav Pilkey builds the story out of short comic sequences, visual jokes and a plot that never slows down long enough for a young reader to drift. Familiar characters return, arguments get settled by cooperation more often than by force, and the artwork carries the humour as much as the dialogue does. It reads comfortably as a standalone even for someone arriving at the series partway through the run.
