Happiness, anger, worry and fear are named plainly here, in a picture book that treats a small child's feelings as worth explaining.
Chitwan Mittal follows a young girl and her lion companion through a range of emotions, and the pair arrive at one simple response when feelings grow too big: a deep breath. Shruti Hemani's illustrations keep the tone warm rather than instructive, and the language stays short enough for toddlers and preschoolers to follow when it is read aloud. The book was recognised at the 2023 Independent Press Awards in the preschool picture book category.
Why it earns a place on the shelf:
• Emotions introduced through a story rather than a list
• A girl and her lion friend as the guides through each feeling
• Illustrations by Shruti Hemani carrying much of the mood
• A calming breathing practice offered as a response children can use
Written for toddlers and preschoolers and for the parents, carers and teachers reading with them, available from Boipoka.
