Twenty tales carried through generations of Middle Eastern storytelling are gathered in this illustrated collection. Rodaan Al Galidi retells stories he first heard in Iraq, among them The Three Princes of Serendip, from a tradition whose threads reach across Europe, Asia and Africa. Kings, sheikhs, paupers, animals and unlikely treasures move through tales that weigh kindness, love, courage, humility and the cost of foolishness. Laura Watkinson's English translation keeps the spoken quality of the originals, while Geertje Aalders' cut-paper artwork gives each story its own visual character.
