‘An Odyssey: The Journey of my life’ is Professor Nurul Islam’s memoir — from early years in Chittagong, through student days in Calcutta, Dhaka and Harvard, to a career that placed him at the centre of Bangladesh’s economic story. As a professor at Dhaka University and director at PIDE, he was a prominent voice in the struggle for economic justice for East Pakistan and contributed to the elaboration of the Six Points Programme that paved the way to independence. As Deputy Chairman of the first Bangladesh Planning Commission he built the institutions and framework for economic policy-making in the new state, before later work at the UN/FAO and IFPRI.
